For many years in his younger days, Max was a very early riser. And as any parent knows, when you have an early riser, that means either mom, dad, or both have to be early risers, too! You can’t exactly let your three-year-old run around the house doing whatever he wants while you sleep.
Because of this, we both can remember many early mornings sitting together on the couch, watching the sunrise outside the window while we watched movies inside with our little man. One of his absolute favorite movies to queue up was Curious George 3: Back to the Jungle.
The movie’s theme song, “Welcome to Paradise” by the Plain White T’s, has been a family favorite ever since. We don’t just love it because it’s a fun, upbeat song—we love it because it always conjures up memories of that very special time in our lives and those quiet morning movie viewings with our son.
If you aren’t familiar with this track, it is actually a fantastic piece of pop-culture trivia. When the Plain White T’s signed on to score the film, they were stepping into the massive shoes left by Jack Johnson’s legendary soundtrack for the original 2006 Curious George movie.
They didn’t just write the theme song. They went all in, writing multiple original tracks for a full soundtrack effort. The brilliance of “Welcome to Paradise” lies in its dual appeal. The band kept their signature acoustic pop-rock sound but tailored the themes to a purely G-rated level. Kids love the playful energy, and parents don’t mind having it on repeat in the car.
Because Curious George 3 was a direct-to-video release in 2015, this incredibly catchy track remains a “hidden gem” in the Plain White T’s discography, mostly known only to the lucky families who watched the movie!
These days, Max doesn’t get up quite as early as he used to on his days off from school. Middle school life will do that to a guy! But we still have our family movie time, and we still make family time for music in between all of our other crazy activities. And yes, every now and then, we still pull out Curious George 3, we still enjoy the movie, and we definitely still sing along.
