Welcome back to Tune Talk! This time around, we are taking a look at a massive pop-rock classic: “I’m Still Standing.” However, there is a fun twist for this entry. Max specifically chose the Taron Egerton version for our road trip ratings.

Max first began to love this version after we watched the 2016 animated movie Sing. Taron Egerton voiced Johnny the gorilla, and this track quickly became one of Max’s absolute favorites. Taron actually knocked the vocal performance so far out of the park that Elton John himself was blown away by it—which eventually helped pave the way for Taron to play Elton in the 2019 biopic Rocketman!
I gave this version a solid rating because it really is a great cover, but I still prefer the original. I am always open to all kinds of music and different versions of a song, but for some reason, I almost always tend to gravitate toward the original as my favorite. I am not entirely sure why that is—perhaps it is simply because it is the very first version I ever heard, so it is the one I know best! There have definitely been a few exceptions, but in general, at least 90 to 95 percent of the time, I tend to favor the original track.
Lori is the ultimate Elton John fan in our house. She went to several of his concerts with friends before we even met, and we have seen him together many, many times over the years. When Elton announced his final retirement tour, we knew we absolutely had to get tickets. Max was finally old enough to attend, so we brought him along, knowing it might be his only chance to see this particular music legend live.
During the concert, the opening chords of “I’m Still Standing” started to play. Max—recognizing the song he loved so much from Sing—immediately jumped to his feet and started singing and dancing along in the crowd. It was an incredibly awesome night, bringing his favorite movie soundtrack and Lori’s favorite artist together in one perfect moment.
