Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd

Welcome back to Tune Talk! After tackling our very first country song, we are staying in the neighborhood but shifting gears over to an absolute Southern rock legend: Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”

There is a lot of fascinating music history packed into this track. It was famously written as a fiery response to Neil Young’s songs “Southern Man” and “Alabama,” which were highly critical of the South, prompting Skynyrd to write this in defense of Southern pride.

It’s funny how sometimes you dive deep into the meaning of a song’s lyrics, and other times, you just sing along completely blindly without ever questioning them. Such is the case with the Neil Young reference here. I have heard this song hundreds of times, and I never once stopped to wonder why they were bringing him up. With lyrics like, “Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her / Well, I heard ol’ Neil put her down / Well, I hope Neil Young will remember / A Southern man don’t need him around anyhow” blatantly hanging out there, you would think I would have been a little more curious! But no, I just sang along for years without ever wondering what the backstory was. (And ironically, despite this song becoming the ultimate anthem for the state, none of the three band members who wrote it were actually from Alabama!)

It is no doubt a legendary road trip song, but when we hear those opening guitar chords in our house, our minds immediately go straight to the movie Forrest Gump—specifically the scene where Jenny is helping teach Forrest how to dance.

That movie connection actually inspired one of my favorite family memories. We have a video of me holding a little baby Max up on his feet before he was even old enough to walk. I was holding him up and making his arms do the exact same “Forrest Gump dance” to this song while we all cracked up. Even though that video was taken more than ten years ago, we still think of it, laugh about it, and watch it to this day. It is one of those wonderfully silly moments that permanently attaches a song to your heart.
