Champagne Supernova… Seven minutes of slow-building, absolute musical awesomeness! One could also say that it is seven minutes of absolute lyrical nonsense. Whatever you choose to call it, I love it, and listening to it never gets old.
What exactly do those lyrics mean? Have you ever Googled it? Give it a try sometime and you will be in for a fun ride! There are many fan theories and debates about what some of the lines mean. The band members themselves have even said from time to time that they have no idea either, or have offered many different explanations for the same line.
One great example is the line “slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball.” Noel Gallagher has said it was put there to rhyme with the word “hall,” that it references the name of a car, and that the idea came to him while watching a British TV show that had a butler who slowly walked through the halls. So which one of his stories is the truth? Perhaps that answer best lies in one other thing he has said about the lyrics – that he was “not entirely sober” while writing them.
Hidden meanings, or simply a lot of fun lyrics that mean nothing, it’s hard to pass this one by when it starts playing. We all rated this one on the higher end of the scale, and while last week’s song, “All I Want” by Toad The Wet Sprocket, was rated a 5 by Max because it was “too slow,” this week’s slower song received an 8 – kids! I’m kidding, of course, because the reason for the disparity in ratings has nothing to do with tempo. It has to do with how a song hits our ears and our musical souls, and this one clearly resonated more with him.
